BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY:

The general consensus among economists and policy analysts at the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other international agencies is that corruption is a worldwide problem, but with more debilitating effects felt in emerging and developing countries, such as those found in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Specifically, the World Bank, the IMF, and other international agencies have found that corruption has a greater impact on economic growth in these regions (Achile, 2021). In light of this, Adeyemo (2022) expressed the opinion that corruption is a global phenomenon and that it is not the exclusive preserve of any nation, race, or section of the world but rather transcends national boundaries and frontiers and symbolizes the phenomenal universal unwholesomeness of political leadership. This was said in light of the fact that corruption is not the exclusive preserve of any nation, race, or section of the world.

Because it is embedded in every facet of Nigerian society, corruption is a term that is often used by both adults and children. This is the case in Nigeria. This monstrous practice, known as corruption, has been given a nick name in the majority of Nigerian languages, particularly the three primary languages. The Igbo people name it Igbuozu, the Yoruba people call it Egunje, and the Hausa people call it Chuachua, according to Agbo (2022). It is no longer looked down upon or considered embarrassing for people to participate in corrupt actions. It is conceivable to hear someone publicly lamenting that there is no Chuachua, Egunje or Igbuozu at his or her place of work, and as a result, a person could swiftly quit if he or she finds another job where there is potential for Chuachua. Chuachua, Egunje, or Igbuozu is now accepted. That is the extent of the problem!

This menance has led to circumstances such as the delayed flow of files in offices, the police extortion of toll payments, port congestion, lineups at passport offices and gas stations, the phantom employees syndrome, and electoral irregularities, amongst other problems (Akanbi, 2020).

Citizens are coerced into paying bribe money, and citizens also induce the officials with bribes to get whatever they want from government or company offices. Government officials continue to corruptly enrich themselves by converting money belonging to the government that is in their custody to be used for their own purposes. In spite of the fact that corruption is present in every culture, it is especially widespread in Nigeria, and it seems that no one is immune to it, either as a perpetrator or as a victim.

The establishment of a local government is essential in order to fulfill the requirements of catalyzing balanced growth, maximizing citizens' engagement, and arousing government responsiveness. A kind of political and administrative organization, the local government helps to facilitate decentralization, national integration, efficiency in administration, and a feeling of belonging at the grassroots level. All of these goals may be accomplished via the local government. Local governments function as a level of administration in every country in the globe (Akindele, 2022). Despite the fact that it is a globally applicable institution, it may be found operating under a variety of political structures and taking a number of distinct shapes. Local governments, in whatever form they take, have been fundamentally recognized as the route to and the guarantee of administrative efficiency, efficient service delivery, and participatory development. This is the case regardless of the form of existence (Arowolo, 2022). Because of its proximity to the general populace, it is a very important level of governance (Achile, 2021). The local government serves as a feedback institution, conveying the thoughts and requirements of the people at the grassroots level to a more central authority. This appeal is made to both the people and the government (Adejo, 2003).

According to Agbo (2022), corruption in Nigeria is comparable to the air that every living person breaths in and out. According to him, no one takes any effort to breathe in the air; rather, it occurs naturally. The practice of bribery and kickbacks has become so ingrained in Nigerian society that many of us are susceptible to bribery and kickbacks without making any conscious attempt to do so and often without even being aware of it. Because of this, the purpose of the study is to investigate the effects that corruption has on the administration of local government in Nigeria, with a particular focus on the Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA).
